The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
I can still hear my daughters screeching as I left her at preschool for the first time 3 years ago. She cried and broke my heart every day for a couple of weeks, until a friend suggested we read The Kissing Hand. This book tells a sweet tale of a young raccoon who is afraid when his mother has to leave him. She kisses the palm of his hand and he keeps the kiss with him to remind him of his mother. My daughter and I started this same ritual, and within a couple of days, as long as she got her kiss, she was fine. Aside from being a really cute picture book, it is a great tool for parents and teachers to use when dealing with separation anxiety.
